Athletic HOF Inductees 2016

Gina McCabe Myers - Class of 1997

Gina McCabe Myers, Class of 1997, was a two-sport athlete for Springfield High School She captained both the field hockey and softball teams, both of which won the Central League Championship; that softball team went on to become District I Champs. She twice earned 1st Team All-Delco honors as catcher for softball, as well as Inquirer All-Area 1st Team catcher. As a senior, she led the team in batting average (.482), slugging percentage (.714), RBIs (28), and homeruns (2). Gina continued her softball career as catcher for the University of Virginia Cavaliers.


Vilma Cicchinelli - Class of 1981

A graduate of the Class of 1981, Vilma Cicchinelli was a three-sport athlete for Springfield High School, in field hockey, basketball, and track & field. Vilma earned numerous honors, including Co-outstanding Athlete for 1981, Field Hockey MVP, 3-time All Delco Field Hockey Goalie, and a spot on the 1979 All-Star Girls Track Team. With Vilma in goal, the field hockey team won the Central League Championship three times. As a member of the track & field team, she set the school record for the javelin and the 4x100. She earned an athletic scholarship to Penn State, where she was the goal keeper for the field hockey team; as a freshman, she was the starting goalie for the 1981 Division I National Champion Nittany Lions.


Mary Kate Curran - Class of 2001

Mary Kate Curran ‘01 lettered in Cross Country, Winter Track & Spring Track, and was co-captain of all three teams as a junior and senior. In Cross Country, she was 1st Team All-Central for all four years, and 1st Team All-Delco as a junior and senior. In Winter (Indoor) Track, she qualified for the State Meet for three years in a row, and was the Delco Champion in the mile as a senior. And in Spring Track, Mary Kate was a district qualifier as a sophomore and junior before putting up an incredible senior season, including 2nd Team All-Central and Delco All-Star honors, the MVP Award, and setting school records in the 4x800 and the 4x1600, the latter of which still stands.

Mary Kate continued at Penn State earning Cross Country, Indoor and Spring Track honors. She is currently the Head Women’s Track & Field Coach at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.


Greg Gurenlian - Class of 2002

A graduate of the class of 2002, Greg Gurenlian was a multi-sport athlete at Springfield High School excelling in soccer and lacrosse. He was a four year participant in both sports and received MVP honors his senior year in both sports. He went on to an impressive tenure at Penn State University for lacrosse earning 2 time all East Coast Athletic Conference and team MVP honors. Greg was drafted in 2002 by the Rochester Rattlers from the Professional Men’s Major Lacrosse League and currently plays for the Long Island Lizards franchise.


Rick Walls - Class of 1967

A graduate of the class of 1967, Rick Walls was a member of the varsity soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He was voted Best Male Athlete in 1967 and received All County Honorable Mention Honors for basketball in 1967. Since graduation from University of Pennsylvania where he participated in the men’s soccer program, Rick has worked as a stock broker and competed in an adult soccer league where his team medaled in the Pennsylvania Keystone Games in 1995.


Mike Knapp - Class of 1964

A graduate of the class of 1964, Mike was an outstanding athlete who excelled in football, wrestling and track for three years. He was captain of the wrestling team his senior year. He was honored as a Sectional and Regional wrestling champion in 1964 and placed 3rd in the state tournament his senior year. Mike went on to wrestle at college at West Chester University and Washington University where he was undefeated.
